  • Was the Secretary of Commerce under Harding and Coolidge
  • One of America's most intelligent presidents (voted best engineer in the US along with Thomas Edison)
  • Spoke fluent Chinese along with his wife Lou
  • Spent his own money on entertainment in the White House and refused the traditional presidential salary
  • Believed that people were responsible for their own success/failure (much of his belief led to how he reacted to the Great Depression)
